1. Abstract

Generally this research project concerns with Classification of computer networks, Fast Ethernet LAN and Networking and Internetworking Devices and presents the following:
1. Advantages and disadvantages of computer networks that based on scale.
2. Definition of physical layer.
3. Basics of Fast Ethernet LAN.
4. Definition of Switches and Routers.
5. Advantages and disadvantages Switches and Routers.
6. Difference between Switches and Routers.

2. Introduction

This part introduce that the computer network and LANs Computer Networks: are a set of one or greater computers devices, printers or cameras linked to percentage data and sources as get admission to to FTP and many other types of facts. LAN is a set of computer systems and external gadgets that participate a commonplace communications line or wi-fi link to a server within a feature geographic vicinity. [1]

LANs serve one or more users in a home, office or several hundred users in a company.
Home owners and statistics generation (IT) administrators set up LANs so that community nodes can share sources consisting of cameras, printers or sound structures, and so forth...Why are we interested in networks?
There are many systems of interest to scientists that includes man or woman components or components that are bound collectively in how.
Examples include the web, a hard and fast of computers connected through statistics connections, and human societies, which can be collections of people related through acquaintance or social interaction.
Many aspects of these systems are deserving look at.
Some humans observe the character of the individual additives how a computer works, as an example, or how someone's being feels or acts while others look at the character of the connections or interactions the communique protocols used on the internet or the dynamics of human friendships. 

3. Classification of computer networks 

3.1 Classification of computer networks based on scale

There are many specific community architectures and protocols; every has its very own characteristics and alertness domain. Generally speaking, the networks can be categorized into different types in line with its transmission technology.
In this research we will speak the pc networks type According to based totally on scale:

  • PAN (Personal Area Network)
Purpose: PAN networks link devices such as smart phones, tablets, PDAs, printers, laptops or desktops, by cable, for data transmission within the range of an individual person.
Range: These networks are usually designed for personal use and therefore formed by devices that are in a local environment and close to the user.
Data transmission: Data can be transmitted via cable, USB memories or FireWire connectors.
Speed: 10 bps-10Mbps. 

  • LAN (Local Area Network) 
Purpose: LAN networks ask the interconnection of data technology devices like laptops, PDAs, printers, storage units or servers.
Range: within limited areas such as: two or more devices in a house, or office buildings.
Data transmission: Although most of LANs use Ethernet or Wi-Fi, they also can be setup electronically thru copper wires or glass fiber-optic.
Speed: 100-1000 Mbps 

  • MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) 
Purpose: MAN networks are similar however larger than LAN networks (in reality MANs join LANs to each other at excessive velocity).
Range: MANs are used primarily in cities.
Data transmission: The computers connected to MANs are overwhelmingly connected through optic cables or other digital media.
Speed: 10 Mbps- 10 Gbps (fiber- optic).


  • WAN (Wide Area Network)
Purpose: A WAN is an unlimited set of LAN and MAN networks linked to every different.
Range: A WAN network can be used over a state, province or country. 
Data transmission: Many technologies are available for these networks; some examples are fiber optic cables, radio wave transmissions or satellite.
Speed: 1Mbps-1Gbs. [2]


4. Fast Ethernet LAN

    4.1 What is the Fast Ethernet LAN?

Fast Ethernet LAN was designed to compete with LAN protocols like FDDI or Fiber Channel. 
IEEE created Fast Ethernet under the name 802.3u.
Fast Ethernet is in compatible with Standard Ethernet; however it can transmit information multiple times quicker at a pace of 100 Mbps.

The Summary can be the goals of Fast Ethernet as follows:
1. Upgrades the data rate to 100 Mbps.
2. Makes it compatible with Standard Ethernet.
3. Keeps the same 48-bit address.
4. Keeps the same min and max of lengths.

4.2 MAC (Medium Access Control)

The four-wire implementation is designed only for category 3 UTP (100Base-T4).[3]

5. Networking and Internetworking Devices 

  5.1 Switches

Switches are a multi port device connects devices together on a single computer network.
It is also called , MAC Bridge ,bridging hub ,switching hub.
Switch works in as a controller, associating PCs, printers, and servers to a system in a office or an organization.
Switches permit gadgets on your system to talk with each other, additionally like different systems, making a system of shared assets through data sharing and asset portion, switches conserve and increment profitability. [4]
There are two essential  varieties of switches to decide from as a major aspect of your networking basics:

Advantages of Switches:

More expensive compare to network bridges.
Network connectivity issues are difficult to be traced through the network switch.

5.2 Routers

A router is a device that communicates among the net and consequently the gadgets in your private home that connect with the net. As its name behold, it “routes” visitors among the devices and therefore the internet.
Routers allows to all computer systems that networked to percentage one Internet connection, and this is saves money.
“ Usually this tool connected to two or extra specific networks.

Advantages of Routers:

6. Conclusion

In conclusion, a network is  or more computers linked collectively using a telecom gadget for the aim of speaking and sharing assets.So, without having a network, Companies would not be able to share resources and increase productivity more effectively. Fast Ethernet is very easy to add to most networks. Fast Ethernet in combination with switched Ethernet, creates the perfect cost effective solution for avoiding slow client server networks by allowing the server to be placed on a fast port.
